Waste prevention is key to avoiding the unnecessary consumption of resources and the negative impact this has on the environment, such as climate change.
Therefore, Barcelona City Council is committed to continuing its implementation of policies aimed at advancing towards Zero Waste: reducing the total and per-capita generation of municipal waste; promoting selective-waste collection; prevention; recovery; repair and reuse of resources and raw materials that have yet not completed their life cycle.
The current figures for total waste generation are 743,741 tonnes and 1.27kg/person/year. However, the last few years have seen these figures increasing, so we need to continue working to improve the established percentage by consolidating good waste-prevention habits and practices. Barcelona’ s commitment under the Municipal Waste Prevention Plan expects to save 0.036kg CO2 equivalents/resident/day compared to 2009.
