On Sunday 21 April, Jardí Botànic de Barcelona (Botanical Garden of Barcelona) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a party, free of charge and aimed at all audiences, which allowed the public to enjoy live music, circus and street shows, track games, storytelling, monologues full of humour, giant wooden games, workshops, guided tours and food trucks to eat in the surroundings of Montjuïc Park. By midday, the space had already attracted more than 4,000 visitors and, by the end of the event, the day had attracted 8,856 people.

Located between Montjuïc Castle and the Olympic Stadium, the Jardí Botànic de Barcelona opened its doors on 18 April 1999 with a simple idea: to bring together in Barcelona the plants that have adapted around the world to live in the five regions of the planet that have Mediterranean climate conditions. In addition to the Mediterranean basin, these regions are found in Australia, South Africa, Chile and California.

Two decades and five years later, the Garden displays more than 20,000 plants of 2,000 species of Mediterranean flora distributed according to their geographical origin and in accordance with the landscape they form in nature. Thus, in just 14 hectares it is possible to take a stroll through four continents in a privileged setting with views of the Llobregat delta, the metropolitan area, the Olympic ring and the Collserola mountain range. In addition, the space conserves a collection of bonsais of Mediterranean species and has a seed bank, a fundamental instrument for the conservation of plant biodiversity in Catalonia.

Mediterranean vegetation is considered to be one of the richest in terms of species diversity, but it is currently under great threat due to human activity. For this reason, the Jardí Botànic has two main objectives: to contribute to the preservation of plant species for the future and to raise awareness among the public.
