The courtyard at the Castle of Montjuïc, which will host the installation

You’ll find a welcome at the castle of Montjuïc

From 22 December 22 to 28 February you’ll find a three-dimensional installation in the courtyard spelling out the word 'Welcome'.

Anyone entering the courtyard of the Castle of Montjuïc from 22 December on will find a series of giant three-dimensional letters finished off by rolled wire that spell out the word ‘Welcome’. It’s an installation by Romanian artist Ciprian Homorodean that can be seen at the castle until 28 February.

According to its creator, the installation can be seen or experienced from two levels: from the ground, as a labyrinthine-like path through which the public can walk following the contours of each letter, and, from above, from the terrace, as a three-dimensional monumental word. The choice of the word is not in the least random. Although it’s nice to be welcomed into the courtyard, Homorodean's aim is to make spectators reflect on the dramatic past of the fortress, as well as its current state. Similarly, the word evokes the refugee crisis, and as some countries have opened their doors, others have closed them and the humanitarian drama seems to be endless. The words are therefore built with metal security fences that evoke the image of a border, a jail or a refugee camp.
