Barnasants is back with a plethora of singer-songwriters

The 23rd edition of the festival features 110 concerts and aims to celebrate the figure of the writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán.

A new edition of the Barnasants Festival is beginning and the 23rd edition is, as ever, devoted to both local and international singer-songwriters. The 110 concerts that make up the festival programme will take place from 26 January to 14 April and artists from guest country Argentina will be playing 13 of the concerts. Many of the festival’s performances will be held outside Barcelona.

Focusing on gigs scheduled for the capital city, the main venues are the Harlem Jazz Club, Luz de Gas, Casinet d'Hostafrancs, the Auditori, Centre Cultural Albareda and Centre Artesà Tradicionàrius. The list of invited artists is long: Eduard Canimas, Albert Fibla, Kepa Junkera, Jordi Montañez, Joan Masdeu, Ivette Nadal & Caïm Riba, Enric Hernàez, Eric Vinaixa, Xavier Baró, Roger Mas, Pepet and Marieta, Les Kol·lontai... Some concerts promise to be particularly special, such as Belda & Sanjosex's show on 3 February at the Auditori, which will be the last in their joint project, and Cesc Freixas’ performance the following day at Casinet d'Hostafrancs, which will be dedicated to the writer Manuel de Pedrolo, since this year marks the centenary of the birth of the author of the novel Mecanoscrit del segon origen.

But the festival aims to pay special tribute to another writer: Manuel Vázquez Montalbán. Fifteen years after his death, the festival has designed a poster that incorporates a line from his poetry: “Useless cosmonaut who contemplates the stars so as not to see the rats". According to the festival organisers, like Vázquez Montalbán, the event stands for "critical thinking: defending equality of rights, calling for non-conformism to the political and social situation in our country, and giving voice to struggles and demands that are increasingly necessary in our times".
