The Sala Montjuïc evenings of open-air cinema are here again

For the eleventh year running, the moat of the Castell de Montjuïc plays host to the largest open-air cinema in Barcelona

Already a well-established and unmissable event in Barcelona’s summer calendar, Sala Montjuïc sounds the starting pistol for its eleventh edition with the screening of Blancaneu (Snow White), by Pablo Berger, in a special session that includes an interpretation of the film soundtrack by an orchestra of 25 musicians.

The cycle of films includes classics such as West Side Story, one of the most famous and iconographic musicals in the history of celluloid, Citizen Kane, Orson Welles’s masterpiece and Billy Wilder’s comedy Avanti!.

The series also includes more recent comedies, such as the French film The Untouchables, a good-humoured and personal film that is one of the more popular comedies in recent years and which eventually became the biggest box-office draw in history for a non-English-language film. Other comedies included in the series are The Guard, Moonrise Kingdom and We Have a Pope

Drama will also have its day, with films such as Drive, Nader and Simin, a Separation, Professor Lazhar, Donnie Darko and the apocalyptic Take Shelter and Melancholia. Also worthy of note are the animated film The Secret World of Arrietty and the sci-fi film Source Code.

Another of the high points of Sala Montjuïc will be the screening of the Catalan documentary A Film About Kids and Music: Sant Andreu Jazz Band, by Ramon Tort, which will include a concert by the band itself. While on the subject, all the screenings in the cycle will be preceded by live music.

Sala Montjuïc will close its doors on the 7th of August with a surprise screening of one of the top films in the history of cinema, an event which will only be savoured by those who take the plunge and attend the screening on a kind of cinematic blind date.

Barcelona Cultura and Sala Montjuïc offer the possibility of obtaining two free tickets for the orchestra-accompanied screening of Blancaneu. More information here
