Throughout the period in question Barcelona was heavily influenced by the process of feudalism and the upsurge in maritime trade, both of which led to its establishment as a political, religious and commercial focal point. While life inside the city walls became increasingly ennobled, slums and “new towns” proliferated on the outside.
