The “Palau 100 Bach” concert series will feature a selection of the German composer’s masterpieces

Thomas Hengelbrock, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Jordi Savall and the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música with Andreas Staier will offer four concerts featuring the work of Johann Sebastian Bach in the Palau de la Música

On the basis of the general public’s growing interest in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), the Palau de la Música has programmed a series of concerts entitled Palau 100 Bach to celebrate some of his most significant compositions. The series includes four concerts spread out over the December 2014 - June 2015 season and features Thomas Hengelbrock, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Jordi Savall and the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música with Andreas Staier at the helm.

German director Thomas Hengelbrock will inaugurate the series on the 11th of December with the B Minor Mass, one of the best-loved pieces in the history of classical music. Hengelbrock will lead the Balthasar Neumann Choir, one of the top twenty choirs in the world, according to the specialist magazine, Gramophone.

On the 15th of January, French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will present his interpretation of Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier, another of Bach’s more outstanding works. Aside from being an expert on contemporary music, and French contemporary music in particular, Aimard is very committed to the work of the German composer and his piano renditions are noted for their transparent, analytical treatment of melody.

During the month of March, on the 15th, to be precise, the series will present Jordi Savall, one of Catalonia’s most internationally recognised and, from the point of view of the general public, most respected musicians. Savall will lead his two formations, La Capella Reial de Catalunya (choir) and Le Concert des Nations (period instrument orchestra) in his debut interpretation of the St. Matthew Passion, one of the composer’s most intimate works. The performance is the result of a direct request made to the musician by the Palau de la Música.

The series Palau 100 Bach will finish up on the 1st of June with a performance by the Orquesta Barroca Casa da Música at the hands of German director Andreas Staier, who will also play the spinet, or harpsichord. The repertoire on this occasion will consist of Harpsichord Concerto in A major, BWV 1055, and Triple Concerto, BWV 1044, both by Bach, and Suite in E m and Concerto for Two Flutes in E m, by Georg Philipp Telemann.

The four concerts in the Palau 100 Bach series will take place in the Palau de la Música and ticket prices range from 12 to 125 €, depending on the day. Tickets and more information are available here.
