The Museum of World Cultures organises its first series of conference
On the 7th of May the museum will initiate a series of ten conferences: two for each continent, two dealing with the practise of collecting, and two practical workshops
The Museum of World Cultures opened on the 7th of February this year on the premises of the Nadal and Marqués de Llió Palaces on Carrer Montcada and now presents its first free, general interest conference programme.
With the aim of acquainting visitors with the artistic and cultural heritage of peoples and tribes from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania from a multi-disciplinary perspective, the programme of ten conferences and two practical workshops will begin on the 7th of May and continue up until the month of December.
The first section of the programme will take place in May and June and will include four conferences and a workshop dealing with the geoglyphs, or ancient lines, that are a feature of the Nazca Desert in Peru. The first session, entitled Figurar els ancestres, els esperits i els reis. La pràctica escultòrica a l’Àfrica (Representing ancestors, spirits and kings. African sculptural practises) will be headed by Elena Martínez-Jacquet, and further sessions held up until the 18th of June will feature Manel Ollé, Pere Duran and Victòria Solanilla, who will speak about ancient China, the Duran Vall-Llosera Foundation collection, and Mesoamerica.
Activities will resume on the 17th of September with six further conferences and a screening of the Chris Marker and Alain Resnais film Les statues muerent aussi (Statues Also Die). The final sessions in the programme will include conferences by Ariadna Baulenas and Ricard Bru dealing with funeral practises in the Andes and Japanese nature and art respectively.
