The MEAM presents the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the work of sculptor Josep Llimona

The exhibition commemorates 150 years since the birth of the Modernist sculptor and includes more than sixty pieces, some of which are on display for the first time

From the 3rd of December on, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) will host A walk around the work of Josep Llimona. 150 years, to date the most comprehensive exhibition of the work of the Catalan sculptor and a tribute to one of Modernism’s most emblematic and well-respected artists on the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Josep Llimona was born in Barcelona in 1864 and died in the same city seventy years later. He is best known for pieces such as the equestrian statue of the Count of Barcelona, Ramon Berenguer the Great, located in the Barcelona square of the same name, the monumental tribute to Doctor Robert located in the Plaça Tetuán and Despair (aka “Desolation”), currently housed in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.

Curated by Natàlia Esquinas, the exhibition offers a retrospective of the artist’s entire career, beginning in his formative years with pieces such as El Fill Pròdig, from 1879, continuing through to pieces produced towards the end of his life, such as Adolescent and Naïve, both from 1924, and without overlooking some of the artist’s more purely symbolic pieces such as Modesty, from 1891. The pieces for the exhibition are on loan from the Josep Llimona family collection, private collections and a number of public and private foundations and museums.

A walk around the work of Josep Llimona. 150 years can be seen from the 3rd of December to the 1st of March, 2015, in the MEAM and tickets are priced at 9 €. For more information, please consult the museum website.
