Carlota Subirós updates this classic play denouncing the social conditions of the working class.
Barcelona's Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) is opening its doors to the classics, specifically to Ángel Guimerà who is the focus of a series of activities this year that aim to celebrate the figure of one of the most important playwrights in the history of Catalan theatre. One of the highlights is the premiere of Maria Rosa, which, together with Terra Baixa, is one of Guimerà's best known works.
What awaits us at the theatre is an updated interpretation of the text, seen from a contemporary perspective. We will therefore be treated to the traditional elements of Guimerà's drama, including murders, revenge, hidden passions and sexual tension, all of which shape a story whose aim is to denounce the precariousness and social injustice of the conditions of the working class.
Directing the play is Carlota Subirós, who has plenty of experience with the staging of classic works, having already produced Chekhov's Three Sisters (Teatre Lliure, 2011) and Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo (TNC, 2013). Now it's time for one of the great names in Catalan literature, Àngel Guimerà, in a scenic challenge which will run from 20 January to 28 February.
When: 20 January to 28 February.
Where: Teatre Nacional de Catalunya.
Price: €23. More information available on the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya website.
