Live opera and ballet on screen at Verdi Cinemas

Eleven live productions will be screened from now until June

Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly and Così fan tutte are just some of the works that can be seen on the screen at Cinemes Verdi from now until June.  The Gràcia-based Verdi cinemas will link up with some of the top theatres in Europe to offer live broadcasts of the performances, which are mainly opera but also feature ballet.

Given the name of the cinema, it’s only fitting that Giuseppe Verdi should feature heavily in the cycle with screenings of the operas Il Trovatore – on 31 January live from London’s Royal Opera House de Londres, Rigoletto – on 6 April from Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Otello – on 28 June, also from the Royal Opera House. But the first screening this year will be a performance of Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on 22 January.  The same ballet will be screened again, in a production by the Royal Opera House in London on 28 February. Another ballet performance scheduled to be screened is Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the Paris Opera on 23 March.

Another composer whose operas play an important role in the cycle is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart whose Così fan tutte will be broadcast from the National Opera in Paris on 16 February. A month later, on 16 March the cinema will link up with the opera house of Turin to screen Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. Madame Butterfly by the same composer will be screened from London on 30 March.

On the evening of 25 April cinema-goers can see a production of Rimski-Korsakov’s La fille de neige. And finally, in June, as well as the above mentioned Otello by Verdi, Rossini’s La Cenerentola can be seen on the 20th live from Paris.
