L’Auditori kicks off the New Year with a festive musical performance

On the 4th of January at 6 pm the Barcelona Municipal Band will offer a popular programme of Viennese waltzes, polkas, minuettes and Basque folk melodies

L’Auditori has programmed a grand New Year’s Concert of popular and festive music to kick off 2015 at the hands of the Barcelona Municipal Band and its current director, Salvador Brotons.

Mini-suites by Bizet, Basque melodies by Guridi, pantomime music by Usandizaga, the descriptive music of Ketelbey (In a Persian Market) and barcarolles by Offenbach will be just some of the surprises, though it is inconceivable that the programme should not include more traditionally festive pieces such as Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Waltz and two of the most popular pieces by Johann Strauss II, the Champagne Polka and the Blue Danube Waltz.

Founded in 1886 as a wind and percussion orchestra, the Barcelona Municipal Band has long since established itself as one of the musical ensembles that are often called upon to cover official Barcelona City Council acts and events. While the orchestra has had many directors over the course of its history, the current formation is L’Auditori’s resident ensemble under the direction of Salvador Brotons, who has extended the repertoire of the orchestra to include more modern pieces while consolidating its extensive repertoire of classics.
