La Pedrera hosts a retrospective on El Lissitzky

The exhibition “El Lissitzky. The experience of totality” includes samples of all the Russian artist’s facets and can be seen up until the 18th of January

Painter, designer, architect, photographer, typographer... the list of trades and professions of this committed and multifaceted artist is as extensive as it is varied. La Pedrera is currently hosting a retrospective on El Lissitzky, an artist who believed in art as an agent for social transformation.

Born in Russia in 1890, Lazar Márkovich Lissitzky is best known for his constant search for a new art form that would define the individual born following the October Revolution of 1917. Lissitzky himself had first-hand experience of the social transformations that followed the revolution and struggled to express them on paper. Intentionally distancing himself from an ivory tower approach, he sought to create a new universal language that would serve the society of the time and in doing so became one of the leaders of the European avant-garde movement.

Curated by Olivia María Rubio, the exhibition in La Pedrera presents El Lissitzky’s work in chronological order, beginning with his first illustrations for traditional Jewish tales and evolving towards the famous Proun style, a series of abstract, three-dimensional, geometrical, suprematist-style compositions which he also extrapolated to three dimensional space through installations, innovations in expositional design and architectural projects.

The exhibition also includes information relating to his research into publishing design and his notable contribution to modern typography and the union of text and image - all in all, a comprehensive exhibition that contains samples of all the facets of this versatile Russian artist.
