Michael Joo

Ghosts in forms and matter

The gallery Carles Taché to extend its exhibition of the works of American artist Michael Joo, which combines elements of sculpture and geology.

Michael Joo is an internationally renowned American artist who works on different ideas and in different formats. The first one, which connects with his work at the most direct and superficial level, is sculpture: Basically, Joo works with shapes, with materials structured in space, in such a way that what we see as blocks of material such as wood, stone or synthetics communicate to us outlines, colours and presences. But, at the same time, Joo's art is about absence: what one cannot see is as important as what one actually sees. There are ghosts in his pieces, invisible presences that tell us about a lost gone past, which is what the exhibition Uniformitarian Assumptions (and other ghosts) aims to tell us about. It can still be seen at the Carles Taché gallery.

When we enter the exhibition space we are faced by what look like ancient rock from an arid desert. This geology shows us the ghosts of the past, speaks of the evolution of the crust of the earth, which Joo represents in a way that lies half way between poetry and philosophy.
