Focus On > Battlefield, conferences dealing with documentary photography in La Virreina

The conferences (16/10, 23/10 and 6/11) will reflect on the role of this photographic modality in current situations of conflict or violence

Com no fotografiar una guerra, La història com a relat and Terra de ningú entre l'art i el documental (“How not to photograph a war”, “History as a tale”, and “No man’s land between art and documentary”) are the titles of the three conferences that La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, in conjunction with Creació de Fotografía Documental (CFD) in Barcelona, will be offering free of charge on the 16th and 23rd of October and the 6th of November.

The conferences are part of the second edition of Focus On, a meeting place for professional photographers and amateurs with the aim of sharing new ideas and strategies that are reinventing the world of documentary photography every day.

This year’s three conferences focus on how conflict is represented and propose a reflection on the different perspectives that question the concept of “battle field”. Bearing this in mind, and in an attempt to surpass the typical language of photojournalism, the series focuses more on the exploration of landscapes, life itself, and the memory of the men and women who live in situations of conflict.

The first in the series of conferences, on the 16th of October in the Espai 4 hall of La Virreina, will be headed by the renowned photographer Simon Norfolk. The second, on the 23rd, in the Virreina LAB conference hall, will be at the hands of Mikel Bastida, a photographer born in the Basque Country. Northern Irish photographer Paul Seawright will have the opportunity to present the final conference on the 6th of November, once again in the Espai 4 hall, and will focus on the duality existing between art and documentary. All conferences will begin at 7 pm.
