Exhibition: “Pérez de Rozas. The Photographic Chronicle of Barcelona (1931-1954)”

The new exhibition at the Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona (Photographic Archive of Barcelona) takes a look at the first era of one of the dynasties of photojournalists that has left its mark on the history of photojournalism in Barcelona in the twentieth century.

From 12 November, the Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona presents the exhibition entitled Pérez de Rozas. The Photographic Chronicle of Barcelona (1931-1954). The exhibition offers a journey through the first era of this family of photojournalists, who left their mark on photojournalism in Barcelona in the twentieth century.

Founder of the dynasty was Carlos Pérez de Rozas Masdeu, who was joined during the Second Republic by his two older sons, Pepe Luis and Carlos, who continued stamping their photographs with the “Pérez de Rozas” seal.

From 1932, the firm was linked to Crònica Gràfica, the institutional initiative to create a photographic record of the public life of the city and which was the embryo of the Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona.

The exhibition presented today by the Arxiu Fotogràfic is organised in three areas: the Second Republic, the Civil War and the early Franco era. The exhibition presents 123 photographs, the majority of which are from the era and signature, and copies of the press of the time with photographs by Pérez de Rozas. A further 600 photographs will be available to view on three interactive digital platforms situated in the three exhibition areas.

In addition, a virtual exhibition has been created, and users who wish to will be able to collaborate by providing first-hand information about each of the photographs and improving the description. Parallel to this, the Arxiu Fotogràfic has also presented the catalogue entitled Pérez de Rozas. The Photographic Chronicle of Barcelona (1931-1954).

The exhibition has been organised by Andrés Antebi, Pablo González and Teresa Ferré from the Observatory of Everyday Life, an independent organisation that works to recover and disseminate the biographies and photograph collections of some of the major photojournalists of the early decades of the twentieth century in Catalonia.
