The 61st Maria Canals International Music Competition gets underway

For another year running Barcelona becomes a world piano stage with the celebration of the competition, which unites 80 talents from the world over in the Palau de la Música

From the 15th to the 25th of March, 80 talents from around the world will participate in the 61st Maria Canals International Music Competition of Barcelona. The competition, the most important of its kind in Spain, was created in 1954 and is one of the first in the world to be accepted by the World Federation of International Music Competitions. It was first held in the Palau de la Música in 1958.

The initial eliminatory phase will take place from the 15th to the 18th of March, the second eliminatory phase on the 19th and 20th, the semi-finals on the 22nd and, on the 25th, the final, which will be held in the main concert hall, beginning at 8.30 pm, with the accompaniment of the Catalan National Youth Orchestra (JONC). The prize-giving and closing ceremony will be held on Friday the 27th.

The competition offers more than 70,000€ in prize money as well as a series of lucrative concerts around the world. In addition, the JONC will organise a further concert for the best-classified Catalan contestant to pass the initial eliminatory phase. In the event this position remains vacant, the offer will go to one of the semi-finalists.

Since 1954 the Maria Canals International Music Competition, which celebrated the centenary of the famous pianist last year, has organised over 110 competitions for piano, voice, violin, cello, guitar, flute, percussion and chamber music, featuring 7000 contestants from more than 100 countries spread over the 5 continents. Families throughout the city lend their pianos to the contestants so that they may practise
