The 16th edition of El Mecal

The international Short and Animated Film Festival of Barcelona will take place from the 6th to the 30th of March, with The Netherlands as guest country

Already a national and international benchmark in the field, the 16th edition of Mecal Pro, the Short and Animated Film Festival of Barcelona, will take place from the 6th to the 30th of March, covering virtually the entire month.

As is customary, the festival is divided into official sections which, this year, are entitled International, Oblique, Documentary and an additional section devoted to Animation (following last year’s success). There will also be parallel sections subdivided into a total of fifteen categories covering a wide range of themes. Screenings will be held in the Antic Teatre, the Instituto Francés, Arts Santa Mònica, Cinemes Girona and the CCCB.

This year’s edition of El Mecal has The Netherlands as guest country and two sections will be dedicated to the best and most recent of that country’s short film productions. In addition, Dutch film maker Rosto, the director of the Mind My Gap project, will be offering a masterclass. There will also be a special event in collaboration with the British Council which will include presentation of the nominees for the BAFTA Awards and a retrospective of the early films of French director Jacques Demy.

Aside from the ever-popular sessions dedicated to sex and horror, the 16th edition of the festival will include a tribute to one of the legends of fantasy film, Frankenstein, a section of short films about cats, a special section dedicated to bicycles, a separate section devoted to video clips and advertising spots as well as presentations and workshops featuring artists and experts in the field.
