Until the last day of March, the Ateneu Barcelonès will be hosting the exhibition Stefan Zweig. Universal Author, an exhibition that will be held on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the author’s death, and that will be presented at the National Library of Vienna and then set up at the Municipal Library of Salzburg. It shows the writer, not free of controversy, as an incessant traveller with a pacifist mission.

Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) is currently one of the most widely read German-language authors in the world, also among Catalan readers thanks to the work of Quaderns Crema, La Segona Perifèria and Acantilado in recovering his work. Visitors to the exhibition will find manuscripts, letters, photographs, film fragments and sound recordings, and above all the sensation that through Zweig’s gaze one travels around the world, from Indonesia to Brazil, but also to the past, and specifically to the disappeared Habsburg Empire, which Zweig considered a global model for the coexistence of different peoples.

As a precursor of a communal Europe, Zweig longed for a literature that transcended the borders of individual nations. The exhibition reveals his extraordinary transcendence and his multifaceted literary work, which is still relevant today. Stefan Zweig’s message for posterity is the utopia of a peaceful world without borders.

The curators of the exhibition are Bernhard Fetz, Arnhilt Inguglia-Höfle and Arturo Larcati, and the exhibition at the Ateneu has been organised in collaboration with the Institut français of Barcelona.
