La Virreina Centre de la Imatge is taking over from another nearby art centre, La Capella, and from 22 March to 26 May is hosting an exhibition entitled “totalmente rostro”, which is, in fact, the continuation and counterpoint of the exhibition “el otro aquí”, a first exhibition by the same artists that can be seen until 21 April at the art space on Carrer de l’Hospital.

In “totalmente rostro”, you will see the filmic image become the protagonist, in an experience that tells a personal story that is marked by distance. The story that the exhibition tells is, in fact, determined by the interweaving and dialogue between two films.

The artists, from Venezuela and Chile, use a filmic language that is documentary in nature, but full of poetry, in which they give an emotional dimension to the images, mineral landscapes and rocks with which they speak of experiences that they share and that they pass on to visitors, among them migration and its effects.

Stones of lava, the skin of a mature woman through the back of which the water is running, landscapes which, paraphrasing the writer Rainer Maria Rilke, are “totally face”…. They are images suspended in time that advance, without a starting point and that do not seem to have a final destination.

A journey through “totalmente rostro” invites visitors to follow the light from the projector to the screen, “in a game of glances, flashes and bounces”, explains the commissioner of the exhibition and artistic director of La Capella, David Armengol. You will also notice the light boxes with negatives scattered around the space, which offer a second reading of what you are seeing.

In both “el otro aquí” and “totalmente rostro” Valentina Alvarado Matos and Carlos Vásquez Méndez focus on the image captured, but in fact they do not only turn the filmic nature into the sole protagonist, Rather, they allow the films to “expand towards a sculptural, installation conception, capable of bifurcating film towards formalities connected to other types of artistic inheritance and interests derived from cinema”, as Armengol explains.
