Nou Barris joins the celebrations for La Mercè with symphony music concerts

[ 22.09.17 ]

Three concerts of symphony music and a charitable musical event form the programme of the Festa Major de Barcelona in Nou Barris. This district joins La Mercè, turning Plaça Major de Nou Barris (a square in the park of the same name) into the venue on this occasion.

All this will give audiences a chance to discover one of the largest parks in the city, designed by the architects Carme Fiol and Andreu Arriola. “Nou Barris Park” occupies the site of the old Santa Creu hospital for the mentally ill. Today, the former hospital houses the Nou Barris Library and the offices of the district authority, among other services.

The venue for all these events is Plaça Major de Nou Barris, where concerts will take place on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 22-25. The programme begins at 9 pm on Friday, September 22, when the Barcelona Municipal Band, conducted by Salvador Brotons, will play a selection of nineteenth-century festa major dances, as well as paying tribute to the Valencian singer-songwriter Raimon, who retired from live performance this year.

The next day, Saturday, September 23, also at 9 pm, it will be the turn of the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra (OBC), conducted by Kazushi Ono. On this occasion, the OBC will be accompanied by a truly outstanding voice: that of the Icelandic mezzosoprano Gudrún Ólafsdóttir. The next day, Sunday, September 24 (9 pm), will be devoted to opera, and the stage will be occupied by the orchestra and choirs of the Gran Teatre del Liceu performing a selection of opera overtures, arias and choruses.

Finally, Plaça Major de Nou Barris will also host another concert, this one a charitable event organised by Vozes, a project that provides musical training for under-privileged children and young people. The result of this initiative is a concert that begins at 12 noon on Monday, September 25, also in Plaça Major de Nou Barris.s.rris.
