Human Pyramids to Celebrate Barcelona’s Festa Major

[ 23.09.17 ]

There can be no festa major without castells. And, during the celebrations for La Mercè, Barcelona, which boasts many fine groups devoted to building these human pyramids, demonstrates the excellence of the city’s castellers, as well as hosting performances by ensembles from other Catalan cities and towns.

This is because, although Barcelona’s castellers are the stars of the show, the programme for La Mercè also includes a day when groups from other parts of the country are invited to display their skill. This year, the event will take place on Saturday, September 23, beginning at the Palau de la Virreina (11.30 am), from where a parade will proceed to Plaça de Sant Jaume. In the square, at 12 noon, this year’s two guest colles, the Minyons de Terrassa and the Castellers de Vilafranca, will perform.

The following day, September 24, the feast of our city’s patron saint, castellers will build “pillars” of honour in Plaça de la Mercè and take part in the Procession of La Mercè to Plaça de Sant Jaume (12 noon). It is in this square that, 12.30 pm, Barcelona’s casteller groups will begin their demonstration. The colles taking part are the castellers of Barcelona, Sants, Vila de Gràcia, Sagrada Família and Poble-sec, as well as the Colla Jove de Barcelona.
