"Hailu Mergia" concert, part of "BAM - Barcelona Acció Musical"

Hailu Mergia (Ethiopia / jazz, funk)

When we think of ethio jazz, the first name that springs to mind is sure to be Mulatu Astatke (maybe thanks to Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers). But the Ethiopian jazz podium has room for another legend, Hailu Mergia, a pioneer in updating the African music tradition by grafting it onto jazz and funk. Keyboard player, accordionist and singer, leader of the famous Walias Band, with which he shared the stages of Addis Ababa in the 1970s with such jazz figures as Duke Ellington, exile to flee the dictatorship led to the band breaking up. Vanished from the scene since then, Mergia returned to the stage in 2013 thanks to the work in uncovering heroes of African music of the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog and label. And after performing for the first time in Europe in may, he returns to Barcelona with his funk of Ethiopian aroma.
