History and Art History graduate Elena Posa first became known to more with-it Barcelona audiences as the scriptwriter, director and presenter of the television programme "Estoc de Pop", produced by Manuel Huerga. Broadcast by Televisió de Catalunya, this TV magazine focusing on pop culture, exhibitions and new trends became a real reference for anyone interested in what was happening on the scene, and received many awards, including an Ondas prize. Later, Posa presented the agenda of events in the culture section of the TVE programme "Metrópolis", which operated a studio in Barcelona at the time.
Parallel to her television work, Posa, who had written several studies of operas by Verdi and Puccini, was head of classical music on the magazine El Món and the newspaper El Periódico.
In December 1987, Posa joined Barcelona City Council's Culture Department as director of the Grec Festival. She was in charge of the festival programme from 1988 to 1995, a period when considerable emphasis was placed on productions and coproductions with Catalan companies. Moreover, this was also a time when the city's alternative venues began to host performances.
From 1991 to April 1995, whilst continuing to run the Grec Festival, Elena Posa was also appointed as director of the Mercat de les Flors theatre. It was whilst she occupied these two posts that the then Spanish Culture Minister, Carmen Alborch, appointed her as director of the National Institute for the Performing Arts (INAEM), a post she occupied until 1996. Posa was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Teatro Real Foundation in Madrid until she was dismissed by the incoming Culture Minister, Esperanza Aguirre.
