Ubication
A gateway to the beaches nearest to the Besòs river, the park links two of the city's large green areas: the parks of Poblenou and Diagonal Mar.

 

The park is the result of an intelligent combination of topography and vegetation that gives rise to very distinct parallel areas, separated by large flowerbeds, some flat and others sloping. It was built over the large car park located on one side of the Ronda del Litoral, the coastal ring road.

There is a long, wide bicycle lane on the mountain-facing side, bounded by a flowerbed that acts as a sort of party wall between the two areas and the flowerbed separating it from the roadway.

As for the sea-facing side, the boundary acts as a kind of mirador over the nearby beaches. Here you will find leisure areas and children’s play areas. And you can go directly to the beaches via C/ Bac de Roda, C/ Selva de Mar and C/ Josep Pla.

History

Located along the estuary, Parc Lineal Garcia Fària is part of the redevelopment carried out on the Besòs seafront for the 2004 Barcelona Universal Forum of Cultures. The main aim of that event was to promote reflection and dialogue on cultural diversity, sustainable development and peace. But the new urban development also enabled a large part of the seafront between the municipal boundaries of Barcelona and Sant Adrià de Besòs to be reclaimed.

Biodiversity

Hence the abundance of French tamarisk (Tamarix gallica) there. The flowerbeds looking onto the road contain several species of grass, with highly decorative combinations of height. They include Hyparrhenia sp., Festuca sp., Pennisetum setaceum and Pennisetum villosum. There are also fields of Mexican feather grass (Nassella tenuissima), a grass that sways gracefully in the wind.

Other important plants besides the grasses include oleanders (Nerium oleander), with spectacular blooms, and palms, especially fan palms (Washingtonia filifera). There are also dwarf palms (Chamaerops humilis) and, providing shade, small groups of paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera).
