Parc del Port Olímpic

Av Litoral, 9994

Lying opposite what was the Olympic Port, the park advances towards the sea in a curve, with a view of the seafront promenade.

This is the central part of a continuous green belt that extends from C/ Doctor Aiguader, over the Ronda del Litoral and up to Parc de la Nova Icària. Following the linear axis that begins at Parc de les Cascades, the first park in this long, landscaped section, the gateway to Parc del Port Olímpic is a large, gravelled avenue with a double row of poles on which the Olympic flags were flown.
On one side of the avenue a large pergola is turned into a resting area with benches, children’s games, and terracota plant pots displaying highly ornamental plants. On the other there is a broad parterre full of trees, shrubs and palms facing the sea which, as it advances, generously expands to give way to a large semicircular space with paths, small squares, wide expanses of grass and a very long, winding bench made with a trencadís broken-tile mosaic.

History

Parc del Port Olímpic is one of the five large, green spaces that were built on Poblenou’s old industrial land at the start of the 1990s, the others being Parc de les Cascades, Parc de la Nova Icària, Parc del Poblenou and Parc de Carles I. Barcelona reclaimed that land and assigned part of it to the creation of new public green spaces: the “Parcs del Litoral” (Coastal Parks). This was part of the major facelift given to the city’s coastal facade for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Biodiversity

Parc del Port Olímpic also boasts important specimens of Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) and stone pines (Pinus pinea), as well as ombu (Phytolacca dioica) and tipu trees (Tipuana tipu). You will also find plane trees (Platanus x hispanica) in the wide, elongated parterres at the beginning of the park and along the large grassy areas that gradually appear as it widens out.
As for palm trees, large groups of dwarf palms (Chamaerops humilis) jut out next to date trees and Canary Island date trees (Phoenix dactylifera and Phoenix canariensis). There are shrubs too, mainly cheesewoods (Pittosporum tobira), abelias (Abelia floribunda), oleanders (Nerium oleander) and large ornamental expanses of juniper (Juniperus sp.).

Art and Architecture

Marc, a sculpture full of colour which the artist Robert Llimós dedicated to the memory of his son, Marc, who died in a car accident, stands at the head of the rows of flag poles, while in the middle of the park, at the centre of a small square pool, there is a bronze figure of Cobi, the mascot for the 1992 Olympic Games, by Xavier Mariscal .
