Parc de la Font Florida

G.V. Corts Catalanes, 196

Parc de la Font Florida is a transitional area between the built-up city and the Montjuïc hillside.

This park is shaped like an elongated “c”, whose centre can be reached from two points in C/ Mineria. The entrance next to Plaça de les Matemàtiques marks the start of an area especially designed for pétanque players. There are plenty of courts to play on, as well as benches to sit on and watch the games. A row of jacarandas at one end brighten the place up in the summer with their blue flowers.

History

This park is a good example of the urban parks created in the 1990s, which steadily opened Barcelona up while covering plots of land with vegetation, plots which, regardless of their size, helped to make more and more green spaces available to the public.

Biodiversity

Spectacular, yellow-flowering tipu trees (Tipuana tipu) may dominate the park’s tree-lined square, and vivid-green-leafed hackberry trees (Celtis australis) the main entrance, but it is the stone pines (Pinus pinea) and Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) on the slope that give the landscape its luxuriance.
There are also holm oaks (Quercus ilex), peppercorn trees (Schinus molle), ombu trees (Phytolacca dioica), poplars (Populus x canadensis) and eucalyptuses (eucalyptus camaldulensis) on the slope and windbreak. Below, you will find Mediterranean shrubs, such as broom (Spartium junceum), and aromatic shrubs, such as lavender (Lavandula officinalis). Jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia) surround the space at the top, embellishing the curve of Carrer de la Font Florida.

Landscaping and Design

The main entrance is on a level with Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. It is a large space, notable for its hackberry trees, and the start of the path that links the park to Carrer de la Font Florida, just above the slope which, with the residential buildings, marks off the centre and largest part of the park.
The heart of the park is a broad, elongated, paved esplanade. A very large, tree-lined square, where there are benches and children’s games on one side, shaded by large-boughed tipu trees, which are lovely to look at, especially when they are in bloom in the summer. The vivid yellow of the flowers, which create a delicate carpet over the ground, contrasts with the green of the slope opposite.
The slope rises up, following the outline of the mountain. It is a kind of grass-covered wall, with a variety of trees and numerous shrubs, a natural treatment reminiscent of the landscaping carried out by J. C. N. Forestier on Montjuïc for the International Exposition of 1929. It crosses a wide path that links the park to the street it is named after, allowing visitors to take a stroll among the plants.
