Catalan dance takes centre stage at Sant Andreu Theatre

From 4 to 6 October the Sant Andreu Theatre (SAT) will for the first time play host to the New-Creation Catalan Dance Display. The series showcases the work of three groups from Barcelona that promote traditional and popular Catalan dances – the Maragall, Ciutat Comtal and Sant Martí schools – which, as well as collecting and popularising traditional Catalan dances, have also choreographed some new dances and shows inspired by tradition, but incorporating the new languages of dance.

The Maragall dance school will open the series with ‘Essències’, a show based on tradition that evolves towards feelings and emotions. The next day is the turn of the Ciutat Comtal school, which will present ‘Acròstic’. This is the group’s latest offering. It consists of seven dances which are interlinked like a poetic composition. The series will close with the Sant Martí school performing ‘Toc d’inici’, a show that pays tribute to all those Barcelona citizens that make the city open, welcoming, multicultural and full of life.

The New-Creation Catalan Dance Display is an initiative by Barcelona City Council’s Cultural Department, the Maragall, Ciutat Comtal and Sant Martí schools and SAT! Sant Andreu Theatre. You can buy tickets for each show by following these links:
