Pastorets del Centre Moral i Cultural del Poblenou

Every Christmas since the Centre Moral i Cultural del Poblenou was founded in 1910, its theatre section has performed L'Estel de Natzaret (The Star of Nazareth), a lyrical drama about the birth of Jesus written by Ramon Pàmies and with music by Msgr Miquel Ferrer. The premiere was held in the Centre Catòlic de Gràcia in 1903. Nearly a hundred people are involved in staging this shepherds' play in the centre's theatre, including actors and actresses, dancers, singers, directors and the technical team.

The theatre section has been one of the centre's most active and most participative. In the past they managed to put on theatrical performances every week. As well as their own productions, plays of very different styles and periods, they also have a programme of dramatised readings.

The Centre Moral began life as the Centre Social and heir to the Patronat Obrer, which was destroyed during Tragic Week in 1909. Originally it set out to provide religious education for working class children in the Poblenou neighbourhood. So it set up free night schools and organised recreational activities such as theatre, children's games, a caramelles singers' group and a consumers' cooperative. Over the years it has added to these. Now it has a music school, a choir and a reading group, as well as organising workshops and social activities. In 2013 it received the Creu de Sant Jordi (St George's Cross) from the Generalitat.
