Agrupació Cultural Folklòrica Barcelona

The Agrupació Sardanista de Barcelona was set up in 1922 and is mainly dedicated to cultivating and promoting sardana dancing.  They have been organising sardana dances in Plaça de Sant Jaume since 1950, under their current name of Agrupació Folklòrica Barcelona. In 2010, they began to take responsibility for the dances that are held on Sunday and holiday mornings in Pla de la Catedral.

To celebrate certain of the group's anniversaries, they have organised performances and special concerts. In 1972, for their 50th anniversary, they put on a show of Catalan music and song starring the group Principal de la Bisbal and the singer Núria Feliu, sardana dances in Plaça de Sant Jaume, and an amazing concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana for the Dia Universal de la Sardana. In 1997, the year of their 75th anniversary, the celebrations included a concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana with the traditional cobla music groups Mediterrània, Sant Jordi - Ciutat de Barcelona and Principal del Llobregat, a recital by the Polifònica de Puig-reig choir, a gathering of verteran sardana-dancing groups, and performances of sardana music.

On its 90th birthday, the organisation celebrated with an exhibition of youth and children's sardana groups. Accompanied by live music from three cobles, they performed the works La maledicció del comte Arnau, the Curse of Count Arnau, and Introducció i dansa, Introduction and dance. The celebrations were brought to a close in the Catalan Parliament.

The group's performances go beyond the world of sardanes: diverse cultural events and activities are organised by the other parts of the organisation, the mountain, Eduard Costa theatre, and cultural tourism groups. In 1988, the Agrupació Cultural Folklòrica Barcelona was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi from the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia), and in 1997 they received the Medalla d'Or de la Ciutat de Barcelona. A memorial to Joaquim Serra is organised annually, as is a series of performances known as the Amics dels Concerts.
