Esbart Ciutat Comtal

The Esbart Ciutat Comtal was founded in 1959 and, since then, it has devoted itself to promoting popular dances and traditional festivals from Catalonia and other Catalan-speaking lands. Their shows are a mixture of both new and traditional dances.

The group have a dance school for boys and girls that offers them musical and dance training, whilst at the same time teaching them about Catalonia's traditional dances and popular celebrations. The school has four levels, based on the age of the pupils, ranging from the smallest to those ready to join the main dance corps.

The Esbart Ciutat Comtal's repertoire consists of shows that have gradually acquired theatrical traits. These include "Rhythms and Rhymes", five pieces linked by rhyme; "Traditions in Dance", a series of traditional dances from Catalonia and Valencia; and "Synthesis", a choreographic compilation representing the Esbart's history, and which was created especially for its 50th anniversary. The pick of the group's dances includes the "Ball de Rams d'Hostafrancs", which some members of the group revived and presented for the first time in 1955. Since then, they have danced it every year on the first Saturday of October, as part of the neighbourhood's annual festival, the festa major.

The group have performed their shows all round Catalonia, as well as in other European countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland and Poland. In 2004 they received the Barcelona Medal of Honour.

Its members also take part in the cultural activities it organises every quarter, including guided tours, concerts and theatre evenings.
