Tortell de Sant Antoni

The Tortell de Sant Antoni is a typical sweet of the festival for this saint, and it is normally eaten the preceding Sunday, the day when the Tres Tombs cavalcade is held. It is a ring-shaped cake made of brioche or puff pastry and stuffed with all kinds of fillings: from the most traditional, marzipan, to chocolate truffle, cream, confectioner's custard, and cabell d’àngel (angel's hair jam). It differs from the Tortell de Reis in that it is not usually decorated with candied fruit.

Around the feast day of Sant Antoni Abat, 17 January, you can buy this tortell in Barcelona's bakeries and cake shops, as well as all over Catalonia. It often contains two surprises inside: a dry broad bean and a figurine of an animal or a small round bell. Like the Tortell dels Reis, whoever finds the bean has to pay for the following year's tortell.
