Tortell de Reis

The Tortell de Reis is a ring-shaped cake made of brioche pastry and normally stuffed with marzipan, although it can be found filled with cabell d’àngel (angel's hair jam), cream, chocolate truffle, jam or confectioner's custard. On top it is decorated with candied fruit, nuts (especially pine nuts and sliced almonds), and icing sugar. Normally it has a golden cardboard crown placed in the middle.

This cake, typical for the Catholic Epiphany festivities, and only eaten on this day, contains two hidden surprises: a dry broad bean and a figurine, which is normally one of the Three Wise Men. According to tradition, the person who finds the figurine is crowned with the golden coronet, and whoever finds the bean has to pay for the following year's tortell.
