First fortnight in October in the Congrés neighbourhood, Sant Andreu district

Description

Congrés is a neighbourhood in the Sant Andreu district which was practically built from scratch following the International Eucharistic Congress of 1952. It is land developed next to the village of Sant Andreu, to satisfy a growing demand for housing.

The festa major, which takes place over the first two weekends in October, is organised by the Comissió de Festes del Congrés. There is a whole host of different activities, including sporting events, community meals, concerts and theatrical productions. Popular culture is well-represented by the neighbourhood associations including the Congregació Diabòlica and the various sections of the Agrupació Congrés.

About festivities

Highlights

Correfoc. The festa major is started by the neighbourhood's devils' group, the Congregació Diabòlica del Congrés, which is in charge of the correfoc, the fire run. They are not normally alone: they invite a couple of other local groups or colles from the city to take part with their fire beasts.

Morning of the festa majorThe first Sunday of the festa major is the day of popular culture. Using Plaça del Congrés as the centre for activities, from early in the morning the activities do not stop: there is a despertada, a wake up call, bright and early, and later is a gathering of the enormous festival figures, the gegants. The morning is completed with a sardana-dancing workshop.

Dance exhibition. On Sunday afternoon, the Esbart Joventut Nostra dance group of the Agrupació Congrés organises an open air festival of traditional dance. The hosts, plus a couple of guest groups, perform dances from all around the Catalan-speaking lands.

Havaneres. The events of the festa major are brought to a close by a cantada d’havaneres, havanera singing, which takes place on the Sunday evening, followed by a firework castle.
