Dates de celebració

First fortnight in June in the Font d’en Fargues neighbourhood, Horta-Guinardó district

Feast Day: 13th June, Sant Antoni de Pàdua

Description

As its name indicates, the Font d’en Fargues neighbourhood is built around a spring and a masia farmhouse, known as Can Fargues. Traditionally, festivals and pilgrimages were held here because the water of this spring was very precious to the residents of Barcelona. Like almost all the neighbourhoods in the Horta-Guinardó district, it experienced a population explosion and very rapid development in the second half of the 20th century.

The festa major, the main festival, takes place mainly between the church and the Casal de la Font d’en Fargues civic centre, which is a very important sociocultural institution in the neighbourhood. As the weather in mid-June is always good, many activities are held at night and in the open air: sporting competitions, community suppers, and outside film screenings, for example. Popular culture is very important, with sardana dances and the pyrotechnics of the devils' groups.

Reason

Sant Antoni de Pàdua is the patron saint of the neighbourhood's parish church which was constructed in 1927, after repeated demands by the residents who had to go all the way to Horta or Carmel for mass.

Sabies que...

At the turn of the 20th century it was very typical, on festival days, to hold dinners or afternoon teas at the springs in the outskirts of the city. The Font d’en Fargues spring was one of the most popular locations because of the supposed medicinal properties of its water. This led to the bottles of the water being sold all across Barcelona.
