The current energy model feeds mainly on the energy consumption of fossil fuels originating from outside the city. The use of these energies is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. The energy generated from local (renewable and waste) resources represents a mere 2% of the total.

Public grants and subsidies for rehabilitating buildings and homes includes initiatives for reducing the environmental and energy bill, using materials with a low ecological footprint and promoting energy self-sufficiency based on local renewable sources, by turning terraces and roofs into energy producers.

Barcelona’s commitment is that we will have reduced per-capita greenhouse gas emissions (or CO2-equivalent) by 40% by 2030, compared to the figures for 2005.

Doubling local power generation and reducing energy consumption by 9.9% by 2020, compared to the figures for 2008.
