The solidarity side of the marathon

Solidarity. Once again this year the platform is encouraging runners to set themselves a solidarity challenge.

The collective solidarity platform and the Zurich Marató de Barcelona are once again teaming up for this year’s event, which takes place on 12 March and has a solidarity side to it. The marathon offers runners the chance to set themselves their own solidarity challenge in aid of an NGO of their choice. Last year 150 runners signed up for the initiative, with a total of 55 challenges. Over 50,000 euros was raised and went to 44 entities.

Athletes can choose the cause that motivates them the most from over 1,700 NGOs and non-profit organisations making up the platform, between them covering such diverse themes as childhood, poverty, rare illnesses, disabilities, scientific research, social exclusion and more.

Becoming solidarity runners means added motivation for athletes when it comes to completing the sporting challenge, contributing to greater personal satisfaction and representing a different way to collaborate with an NGO. Solidarity runners have the chance to make it onto the solidarity podium, which will be in place during the official podium ceremony for the race.

Creating a solidarity challenge is very easy, either as an individual or a group:

—The first step is to create your challenge here as part of the event Marató de Barcelona 2017 Solidària.

  • Choose the NGO or entity you want to raise funds for.
  • Set a funding target.
  • Describe the challenge and include photos or videos.

—The next step is to promote the solidarity challenge. Send people the link with the challenge via e-mail or Whatsapp and promote it on social media, by word of mouth with friends, family, work-mates and everyone else you know.
