World Dance Day 2014

In celebration of the event, the Plaça de la Catedral will host an all-comers choreographed dance on the 29th of April

On the 29th of April, in support of World Dance Day, the Association of Dance Professionals of Catalonia (APdC) have organised a dance event which will take place throughout Catalonia as a tribute to the recently-deceased traditional Catalan dancer and instructor, Joan Serra. In Barcelona the event will take the form of an open-to-all-comers collaborative activity (professionals, amateurs, passers-by, children, adolescents, adults...) which will take place in the Plaça de la Catedral from 6 pm to 6.30 pm on the 29th.

The event will last approximately 15 minutes and will be divided into three parts, beginning with a popular choreography directed by Monserrat Iranzo and Gerard Palet and accompanied by the traditional Catalan song, "Rossinyol". Following this there will be a reading of the official World Dance Day message, and, finally, a dance choreographed by Joan Serra..."I ballarem, ballarem, ballarem”. The first two choreographies can be studied by following this video and, for those interested, a general rehearsal will take place in Fabra i Cotas on the 24th of April from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Prior inscription is required via proyectes@dansacat.org.

World Dance Day was established by UNESCO on the 29th of April in commemoration of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), a key figure in the revival of the language of dance choreography.
