The exhibition brings together almost 300 works in different formats.
Organised by the Jeu de Paume of París, in collaboration with Barcelona’s Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) for its presentation in Barcelona, and with the participation many of the world’s leading universities, Uprisings brings together almost 300 works, including photographs and manuscripts , which share the common theme of collective emotions and the political events that have entailed uprisings, social disorder and revolutions. The exhibition is curated by Georges Didi-Huberman of the École des Hautes Études en Sciencies Sociales and is based on his work as a philosopher and historian. He will be the focus of the official opening on 23 February at 6pm in the Sala de la Cúpula. Admission is free.
When selecting the works for this exhibition at MNAC, Didi-Huberman has worked in collaboration with the museum’s Francesc Quílez. Therefore, the Barcelona edition includes paintings, drawings, posters and photographs that offer a unique vision of events like the Peninsula War, the Spanish Civil War and the anti-Franco resistance struggles as depicted by artists like Martí Alsina, Lluís Pellicer, Marià Fortuny and Juli González. These pieces from the collections of MNAC and the Catalan national photographic archive complement Didi-Huberman’s original exhibits, which until now could only be seen in Paris.
The exhibition can be visited until 21 May and will also be accompanied by commented visits on Saturday mornings in March and Nit d'Insurreccions on Thursday 16 March, which will include the screening of Pere Portabella’s film Informe general II. El nuevo rapto de Europa.
