“Twelfth Night”, in the Parc de l’Estació del Nord

The play, performed by the Parking Shakespeare Company, can be seen free of charge up until the 4th of August

The Parc de l’Estació del Nord, Barcelona, is hosting Nit de reis (Twelfth Night), one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays, up until the 4th of August. On this occasion the text, adapted and directed by Iban Beltran, is performed by Parking Shakespeare, who offer free, open-air productions of one of Shakespeare’s plays every summer. Twelfth Night, in this case, can be added to the list that already includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Love’s Labour’s Lost.

The initiative began in 2009 with the idea, originally imported from the UK, of representing the works of Shakespeare in public parks in the absence of set design or sound and light equipment, leaving the onus entirely on the text and the actors themselves.

Twelfth Night is a comedy, more sour than sweet, about misunderstandings, human appearances and making mistakes, a comedy about the anything-but-trivial entanglements that begin the moment that Viola, one of the protagonists, decides to dress up as man by the name of Cesari in order to enter the services of Orsino, Duke of Illyria. The problems, however, arise when Viola, who everyone thinks a man, falls head-over-heels in love with the Duke while, at the same time, the Duke is obsessed with Olivia who, while professing she has no time for amorous activities, is smitten by passion and love at first sight on meeting Cesari.

This convoluted beginning gives way to even more entanglements among the characters in this intensely choral work. Love, heartbreak and appearances (feigning to be someone we are not and failing to accept reality) are some of the ingredients of this work by Shakespeare. The cast is composed of actors and actresses such as Elies Barberà, Óscar Bosch, Mireia Cirera and Ester Cort.
