The Three Wise Men come to Barcelona

On the 5th of January, Their Majesties Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar and entourage will bring their special magic to the city’s streets in the form of the Cavalcade of Magi

As with every year, on the 5th of January the Three Wise Men will come to the city to round off the Christmas celebrations with their traditional Cavalcade of Magi - a procession that includes a surprising succession of floats and tons of sweets for any children who want to watch the parade at any stage along its route. The parade will begin, as is customary, at 4.30 pm on the Moll de la Fusta, when Their Majesties Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar arrive in their ship, the Santa Eulàlia, in the company of their entourage.

Following the reception ceremony, Their Majesties will commence the cavalcade along a route that will fill the city’s streets with festive joy from 6 to 9 pm. With a total of 1300 people and almost a kilometre of travelling show, the Cavalcade of the Magi is Barcelona’s biggest and most participative parade and, this year, has revamped the traditional accompanying soundtrack to include five new pieces. For safety reasons, sweets will be distributed from the final two carriages in the parade. Those children who should so desire, and have not already done so, are encouraged to deliver their letters to any of the eighty-or-so letter carriers who will accompany the Magi. The event was presented today in a press conference with Barcelona’s Deputy Mayor for Culture, Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation, Jaume Ciurana, and the Director of Festivals and Traditions of the Barcelona Culture Institute, Marta Almirall.

The cavalcade will start on Avinguda Marquès de l’Argentera at 6 pm and finish up on Avinguda Rius i Taulet. Approximate times for the arrival of the first float are: Plaça Antoni Maura (6.45), Plaça Urquinaona (7.10), Plaça de Catalunya (7.20), Plaça Universitat (7.50), the corner of Carrer Sepúlveda and Carrer Urgell (8.05) and Plaça Espanya (8.30), with the arrival at the corner of Avinguda Maria Cristina and Rius i Taulet programmed for 8.45 pm. Two spaces along the parade route have been adapted for persons with reduced mobility - in front of the stage on Moll de la Fusta and in the Plaça Antonio López.

The progress of the parade may be followed at any time here and the entire parade will be retransmitted live here. Anyone who so wishes can form part of the collective photo album for the cavalcade by using hashtag #reisbcn and registering here.
