Third edition of the FAD festival

Over a period of two weeks, design will take pride of place in Barcelona in a festival suitable for the general public, professionals and businesses alike

From the 25th of June to the 11th of July, the city of Barcelona will be hosting the third edition of FADfest, organised by the Foment de les Arts i del Disseny (Fostering Arts and Design, FAD). The international festival will include exhibitions, debates, conferences and awards ceremonies in a total of more than twenty events that bring together the best in design and upcoming creative talents.

The inaugural event in Design Hub Barcelona, the new main offices of FAD where the majority of the events will be held, will see the opening of the exhibition The best design of the year, which can be seen until the 31st of October. The exhibition includes the finalists and winners of the prizes awarded by the FAD associations in the different design disciplines, such as the Laus awards for graphic design and visual communication, the Delta awards for industrial design and the FAD awards for architecture and interior design, among others. The prize-giving ceremonies for the various competitions will be held over the course of the two weeks of the festival.

On the evening of the 9th of July, the Saló de Cent will host the fourth edition of City to City, the annual international prize awarded in Barcelona to urban projects that have transformed cities throughout the world. This year’s winner is the Stalled Spaces initiative, from Glasgow, whose objective is the temporary use of abandoned urban spaces. The event will be presided over by the mayor of Barcelona and the inaugural presentation will be made by Pier Giorgio Olivetti, the director of Cittaslow International and a specialist in sustainable urban development.

The closing ceremony on the 11th of July will include the 35th edition of MODAFAD, the fashion show for upcoming fashion designers. The event, which will include selected pieces from the best of the final year projects by design students throughout the country, has served as a platform for many of today’s renowned creators.

The Filmoteca also joins this year’s festival proceedings with the screening of the Design and Cinema series.
