The sense of culture

A debate concerning the ethical and political relevance of culture, on the 18th and 19th of September in the CCCB

Does culture matter? What is its purpose? What do we understand by the word “culture”? For whom should culture be meaningful? We often hear debates about culture, but it is a rare thing for these questions to be so clearly formulated. They are, however, some of the underlying questions in any discussion relating to public and private support for the cultural sector.

On Wednesday the 18th and Thursday the 19th of September, the CCCB will be hosting a debate about “The sense of culture”. The objective of the debate is not to discuss cultural policy, or to focus on the cultural circumstances resulting from the current crisis, but rather to foster a more in-depth understanding and discuss the raison d’être of culture itself, leaving aside purely instrumental justifications. Beyond its aesthetic value and the financial and social benefits derived from culture, this debate aims to highlight its ethical and political relevance.

The debate is directed by Antonio Monegal and boasts the participation of noted cultural figures such as film producer Isona Passola, philosophers Marina Garcés and Xavier Antich, journalists Emili Manzano and Francesc-Marc Álvaro and cultural administrators Jorge Luis Marzo and Marta Cari, head of the Department of Culture, Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation of the Barcelona City Council.

The debate may be followed in-person, via streaming, or via Twitter using the hashtag # SentitCultura.
