Back

Sant Medir is back!

Sant Medir, the sweetest fiesta of the year, is back!

Sant Medir, the sweetest fiesta of the year, is back! On Thursday 3rd of March, horseback processions will once again fill the streets of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi with sweets. Tradition dictates that the stars of the feast day are the groups of friends, called colles, who parade around the streets throwing sweets to the crowds. Things start at 8.45am with the colla Agrupació Bonanova, followed at 9am by the colla Humorística de Sant Medir, and at 9.30am by the Nova de Sant Medir de Sarrià, l’Antiga de Sant Medir, and the Jovenívola de Sant Medir. Després. Also in line with custom, the colla de Sarrià and the colla Agrupació Bonanova will meet up at the Seu del Districte in Plaça del Consell de la Vila, where the official reception will take place at 11am. There will then be a blessing in the square at 11.15am and everything will finish at 8pm when all of the colles in the city, except the colla Nova de Sarrià, will get together in Carrer de Sant Salvador i Escorial to start the parade led by the colla designated to be the federation and the Municipal Orchestra of the Mounted Guàrdia Urbana Police.

These are the activities scheduled for Feast of Sant Medir, a fiesta that follows the tradition of the first religious pilgrimage in honour of Sant Medir, in which a baker from Gràcia who was devoted to the saint, fulfilled a vow to walk to his chapel, a Romanesque construction dating from the 10th century, on the 3rd of March 1830. To attract people’s attention, he offered sweet pastries that he had baked, which has become, in the form of sweets, one of the insignias of a celebration that brings together colles and citizens, and especially kids. Don’t miss it!
