Sala Montjuïc kicks off its 13th edition

From the 3rd of July to the 7th of August the Santa Eulàlia moat of Montjuïc Castle will once again offer open air summer evenings of music and film featuring such box office hits as "10,000 Km", "Boyhood", "Frances Ha", "Reservoir Dogs" and "The Great Beauty"

From the 3rd of July to the 7th of August the Santa Eulàlia moat of Montjuïc Castle will once again offer screenings as part of the Sala Montjuïc open air cinema programme. The event, now in its 13th edition, offers a selection of the best in recent and classic films projected in high definition onto a 166m2 screen. Most of the full length films will be preceded by a short film and the evening sessions kick off with live concerts of various musical genres.

Opening night on the 3rd of July will be given over to 10,000 Km, directed by Carles Marques-Marcet. One of the surprise Catalan productions of last year, and starring Natalia Tena and David Verdaguer, the film tells the story of a couple who, for reasons of employment, find themselves obliged to live in different cities for a period of time. The feature film will be preceded by one of the success stories of the last Gaudí Awards, Patricia Font's short film Café para llevar (Coffee to Go), produced by the Catalonia Higher School for Film and Audiovisual Studies (ESCAC). The inaugural musical session will feature a trio including Joan Pons from the band El Petit de Cal Eril and Joan Colomo and Mau Boada of Esperit!

The remainder of the programme will include a film-concert session with the screening of Charlie Chaplin first full-length film, the classic The Kid, accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Carles Robert and interpreted during the screening by the Catalan Chamber Orchestra. There will also be two 'theme' nights, one, a musical evening with Moulin Rouge, the other a Brazilian evening with the animated film The Boy and the World, which has yet to be screened here and was an award winner at the 2013 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Other recent films will include Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wild Tales, American Hustle, Frances Ha, The Great Beauty, Nebraska and Her. Where classic films are concerned, the programme will include Cinema Paradiso, The Big Lebowski and Reservoir Dogs. Once again the film programmed to close the festival has been kept a secret that will only be revealed on the final day, Friday the 7th of August. Before then, however, the organisers will be dropping hints on the website and social networks for those who wish to try and guess the title of the film in question.
