Renoir: the subject of a new exhibition at Fundació Mapfre

The exhibition, which is scheduled to open on 17 September, also includes works by Van Gogh, Degas and Picasso

Renoir among women. From the modern ideal to the classical ideal. Collections from the Orsay and Orangerie Museums is the title of a new exhibition that is scheduled to open in the Mapfre Foundation’s Sala Garriga i Nogués (Carrer de la Diputació, 250). It includes around 60 works and, although Pierre-Auguste Renoir is its main focus, it also features works by Vincent Van Gogh, Maurice Denis, Edgar Degas, Pierre Bonnard and Pablo Picasso.

Among the highlights are Bal du Moulin de la Galette, an icon of impressionism that Renoir presented in 1876 and is coming back to Barcelona after a hundred years since it was exhibited here in 1917 at the Palau de Belles Arts. The exhibition explores the importance of the women of Paris for impressionism, whether in the form of a maternal image or of a nude woman integrated in a landscape.

Paris’s Orsay and Orangerie Museums have lent works expressly for this exhibition, which will be open to the public until January 2017.
