Regatta of ‘currachs’ in Barcelona port

Irish seafaring culture puts into port in Barcelona on the 16th of March next

Next Saturday, the 16th of March, at midday, Barcelona harbour will host the 5th Mediterranean Currach Regatta. Currachs are ancient, hand-made rowing boats that have been used by the inhabitants of the West coasts of Ireland and Scotland for centuries.

Today, however, they are used for recreational and sporting purposes and are a wonderful sight for anyone attending a regatta who allows themself to be caught up in the committed passion of the participating crews.

The regatta in question is organised by the cultural association IOMRAMH, who have managed to convince an ever-increasing number of participants to visit the city from far and wide. Bear in mind that the date is not an arbitrary one, but coincides with St. Patrick’s weekend, the patron saint of Ireland. This will undoubtedly mean that the celebration of the regatta will continue in Moll de la Fusta, between Via Laietana and the Maremágnum promenade where there will be traditional music with Nights Around The Table, Celtic dance with Aires Celtas and products typical of the Emerald Isle. From here on, pints of stout are sure to flow freely.
