Presentation of the pre-book “Racons, llocs i indrets del Coll-Vallcarca” (Nooks and crannies of Coll-Vallcarca)

The Gràcia History Workshop Association has invited the president of the Coll-Vallcarca Study Group, Josep Callejón, to speak about the past and present of his district

On occasion the Fundació Festa Mayor de Gràcia, or Gràcia-district Annual Festival Foundation, organises a social gathering, or ‘tertulia’, entitled El Racó de la Història (History Corner), as part of the Gràcia History Workshop programme. On the 26th of February the group have invited Josep Callejón Giménez, the president of the Coll-Vallcarca Study Group to speak about the book the group has been preparing for some years with the collaboration of the residents of his district (Coll-Vallcarca).

Established in 1986, the primary objective of the association presided over by Josep Callejón is to preserve the historical memory of the Coll-Vallcarca district of Barcelona, located to the north-east of the Gràcia district. For some years now, the group of historians and interested parties that comprise the study group have held weekly meetings in the Coll-Vallcarca Civic Centre, formerly the offices of Bruguera Publishers, in an effort to swap stories and anecdotes relating to the district’s history.

The reason for these meetings is that the members of the group are currently preparing a book entitled La gent del barri vista per la gent del barri (The local residents as seen by the local residents), for the purposes of which, and with the assistance of said residents, they have to date compiled more than 200 relevant writings and articles and approximately 1000 photographs.

During the presentation of the book, on Thursday the 26th of February, Josep Callejón will speak about both the project itself as well as about such emblematic local buildings as the Sant Jordi church, the Mare de Dèu shelter, in Montserrat, the Farigola school, the Balet i Blay castle, the Comas d’Argemir residence and the Baixada de Briz building, the residence of composer Arnold Schönberg from 1931 to 1932.
