Bands and cultural associations come together to stage a cycle of concerts
Ten concerts are scheduled from 24 September to 10 December.
Popular bands and cultural associations, known as 'ateneus', both have a long-standing tradition in Catalonia. And this autumn they're coming together in a series of concerts that make up the cycle Bandes als Ateneus. The protagonists of this new initiative are the Roquetes-Nou Barris Symphonic Band, 'La Valenciana', the Valencia Music Society in Barcelona's band and that of the Pare Manyanet de Barcelona music school. They will be performing at Teatre de Sarrià, Casino l'Aliança del Poblenou, Sants Teatre del Centre and Teatre dels Lluïsos in Horta.
The first of the ten concerts scheduled will take place at midday on 24 September at Teatre de Sarrià with the Roquetes-Nou Barris Symphonic Band and at Aliança del Poblenou with a concert by 'La Valenciana'. The cycle will conclude on 10 December at Teatre dels Lluïsos with a performance by the Roquetes-Nou Barris Symphonic Band. In between, there are concerts scheduled for 22 and 29 October, 5 and 26 November and 2 December.
For the organisers of the cycle, popular bands are “a deeply-rooted tradition in all Catalan-speaking territories, especially in regions like Terres de l'Ebre and País Valencià, where they are something of an institution. Barcelona also has a long tradition”. Likewise, they view the world of 'ateneus' as “a reflection of the cultural vitality of Catalan civil society. Barcelona can boast of a good number of hundred-year-old centres, some of which are taking part in this cycle”.
