The 21st edition of the Barcelona Poetry festival
The 21st edition of the Barcelona Poetry festival

Poetry! Poetry! Poetry!

From 10 to 16 May, the twenty-first Barcelona Poetry festival will once again fill the city with verses.

The 21st edition of the Barcelona Poetry festival comes to the city with a full programme of events that will fill every corner of Barcelona for seven days with verses and literary activities, bringing some of the leading international and Catalan-speaking voices in poetry to the public.

Come and hear verses by poets who write in Catalan, from some of the most-acclaimed to the youngest (Biel Mesquida, Jaume Pont, Antònia Vicens, Josep Piera, Blanca Llum Vidal, Guim Valls, Josep Pedrals, Jaume Subirana, Susanna Rafart, Guim Valls, Maria Isern, etc.); there will also be international poetry, with verses from over twenty poets and artists from countries such as Singapore, Chile, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, France and Palestine. During the poetry festival, poetry will also enter into dialogue with other disciplines, such as music, electronics and the stage arts.

So, guided by Barcelona Poetry, audiences can enjoy performances by Maria del Mar Bonet and Martirio together on stage at the Plaça de la Catedral on Saturday 12th and Leiva and Benjamín Prado performing at Verger on Sunday 13th. But they are not the only big names at the festival. Also performing will be the duet Jansky, Deborah Emmanuel and Dj Kiat, Barba Corsini, Heretics (Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor, from The Ex), Héctor Alterio, Clara Segura and Lluís Homar and Rodrigo Cuevas.

There is also an homage venue: to Montserrat Abelló, Josep Palau i Fabre, Carles Santos, Miquel Martí i Pol and Maria-Mercè Marçal.

On Thursday 10 May, the Jocs Florals de Barcelona prize will be presented at the Saló de Cent Hall of the Barcelona City Council during the Barcelona Poetry opening ceremony. The winner of this prize, which is over 150 years old, was Hilari de Cara i Casaleiz for his collection of poems, Quaderns del port.

As in other years, the Verger del Museu Frederic Marès will once again be the central venue for Barcelona Poetry, although poetry will ring out in many other parts of the city: at the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm, the Auditori de La Pedrera, the Palau de la Virreina, the Fort Pienc Library, the Guinardó – Mercè Rodoreda Library, the MUHBA Vil·la Joana, Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, Plaça del Mercat in the Barceloneta, the TNC, the Fabra i Coats – Creation Factory and the Palau de la Música, which on 16 May will host the 34th International Poetry Festival.
